Olympic medalist set to be honored today

FREDONIA -- Jenn Stuczynski, 2008 Olympic silver medalist in the pole vault, is scheduled to attend the dedication ceremony of the flagpole and monument in her honor in Fredonia's downtown Barker Commons at 11 a.m. today.

The event is being held by the Fredonia Olympic Celebration Committee, which is being reconvened for Saturday's ceremony. The committee is comprised of local community members who rallied the area together to support Stuczynski, a Fredonia native, who represented the United States at the Olympics in China. The Committee also on Saturday will be announcing the establishment of a scholarship in Stuczynski's honor to benefit high school seniors.


'Visit the Farm Day' on tap for today

BELMONT -- The public is invited to take a driving tour around Allegany County to visit small farms from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

"Visit the Farm Day" is sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Allegany/Cattaraugus County and features a diverse array of rural agricultural enterprises at eight farms.

Travelers will move through the countryside of Freedom, Fillmore, Houghton and Rushford, viewing the alpacas, poultry, sheep, grass-fed beef and dairy animals.

Outdoor recreation show scheduled this weekend

OLEAN -- The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce will showcase the area's outdoor recreation attractions and activities this weekend in the Outdoor and Recreation Sports Show in the William O. Smith Recreation Center, War Vets Park and Bradner Stadium.

The gates open on the event at 10 a.m. both days, running through 8 p.m. today and 4 p.m. Sunday.

For a $3 admission fee attendees will be treated to a long list of exhibits, seminars, demonstrations, wildlife and competitions, along with an array of recreational equipment and accessories for sale from area merchants and distributors. The Twin Tiers Striders Club of the Olean Family YMCA will kick off the event at 9 a.m. Saturday with a 5k run/walk through Bradner Stadium and along city streets.
