Joan C. Hjalmarson, former college art instructor July 14, 1941 -- Sept. 9, 2009

Joan C. Hjalmarson, a college art instructor and Amherst resident, died Wednesday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst, after a lengthy illness. She was 68.

Born in Buffalo, the former Joan Fischer graduated from Maryvale High School. She earned a bachelor's degree from Rosary Hill College and a master's degree from Buffalo State College.

She worked briefly as an elementary school teacher in the Holland Central School District, and then as an art professor at Rosary Hill from 1959 to 1963. She later worked as a clerk in Amherst Town Court.

Her husband, Sture, died in 2000.

Mrs. Hjalmarson is survived by a daughter, Linnea Longo; a son, Sture J. Longo; and two sisters, Jean Abrams and Theresa Hjalmarson.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Monday in Dietrich Funeral Home, 2480 Kensington Ave.
