CASTING CALL -- Next time someone questions your urge to go fishing, tell them it's therapeutic. The VA Western New York Healthcare System will take a group of veterans out to Sturgeon Point in Derby on Sunday for a day of fly casting and fishing with the Lake Erie Chapter of the Federation of Fly Fishers. "The benefits are endless," says recreation therapy supervisor Pamela Kaznowski.

SUCH A DEAL -- It's discount week at the Buffalo Museum of Science. M&T Bank is running a "Big Hearts Week" program, which gives a $2 discount on tickets to the current Body Worlds exhibit from now through Sunday to anyone bringing school supplies sealed in their original packaging. A wish list of items can be found at M&T Bank branches.

Then there's the visit from the American Red Cross Traveling Blood Donor Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The first 50 blood donors will get free admission to the museum.

TAKING WING -- Angel Flight, which gives free flights to people who need out-of-town medical treatments, is holding its fourth annual barbecue from 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Erie County Fairgrounds in Hamburg. On hand will be the service's volunteer pilots, as well as some of its passengers, like soldiers Michael Hauser and Tim Juliano, both wounded in Iraq. HERITAGE DAY -- St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, 3275 Elmwood Ave., Town of Tonawanda, celebrates its annual Ukrainian Festival from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday with dancers, the bands Karpaty from Canada and Ridna Shkola from Buffalo, children's activities, theme baskets, raffles and pyrohy, holybsi (cabbage rolls) and other Ukrainian treats. Admission is free.

HELPING HANDS -- Assisting people in dire straits in Kenya and Tanzania are the folks from Future in Our Hands-USA, founded here in Buffalo by Sister Linda Glaesner, SSJ, and Michele Sprada. From 6 to 9 p.m. today, they hold their first fundraiser, in the Sonoma Grill, 5010 Main St., Snyder, with live music, theme tray auctions and food and drink. Tickets are $20. WEEKEND MENU -- The First Volunteer Fire Company of Bergholz holds its monthly chowder and baked goods sale at 11 a.m. Saturday in the truck hall, 2470 Niagara Road, Bergholz. Chowder is $1.50 a bowl, $3.50 a quart or $14 a gallon with your own container.

Instead of its annual field days, Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company, 4591 Lake Shore Road (Route 5) at Rogers Road, Hamburg, holds a chicken and rib barbecue beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday. There's a classic car cruise night from 3 to 8 p.m., live music by Wide Right from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m., plus a theme basket raffle, beer tent and legal games of chance.

BARGAIN TIME -- Cleveland Hill United Methodist Church, 546 Eggert Road, holds a yard sale at 7 p.m. today with $1 admission. It continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with baked goods available and a bag sale starting at noon.
