John C. Oring, ran Champion Sports store for many years Sept. 2, 1937 -- Sept. 5, 2009

John Charles Oring of Amherst, who ran a local Champion Sports store for many years, died Saturday in Millard Fillmore Hospital after suffering stroke in July. He was 72.

Mr. Oring was born in Cleveland and graduated from North Olmsted (Ohio) High School.

He signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1965 as a catcher and played with their Florida State League team, but his baseball career was cut short by an accident in which he hurt his knee.

He then began working in sporting goods. For 30 years, he worked for Champion Sports, retiring in 2004.

A lifelong sports fan, Mr. Oring loved both the Buffalo Bills and the Cleveland Browns, as well as the Buffalo Sabres.

He is survived by his former wife, the former Vivian Martin; two daughters, Monica Opdycke and Jill Thomas; three sons, Timothy J., John Charles Jr. and Charles; and a brother, Gary.

A private service will be scheduled.
