>FEMA teams inspecting flood-damaged homes
By the end of the holiday weekend, federal disaster officials had inspected more than 150 flood-damaged homes in the Southern Tier and committed to more than $340,000 in aid to residents.
Teams from the Federal Emergency Management Agency also were handing out information to residents in Erie, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties on how to register for disaster aid and what assistance is available.
"It was a good start for the holiday weekend," said Jaime E. Forero, the federal coordinating officer for FEMA's local recovery efforts. "But it's just the beginning."
The FEMA teams, working with the state Emergency Management Office, are helping home and business owners who sustained significant losses in the flooding of Aug. 9 and 10 in a band stretching from Silver Creek to Gowanda.
Affected residents must register online at www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling (800) 621-3362. Applicants with speech or hearing impairments may call TTY at (800) 462-7585.
After people register, they then schedule a home inspection with FEMA contractors.
