The Yankees have the AL East in control but Derek Jeter is suddenly in an 0-for-12 slump and even bolted on the media after last night's win over Tampa Bay. That never happens. Even during the darkest times of the 2004 ALCS collapse, Jeter was the first Yankee to face the postgame music. Guess there might be some significance to this record in the Captain's mind, his thoughts to me to the contrary over the weekend in Toronto.
The New York Daily News has put together a terrific Web archive of its Jeter coverage. Has all the stats and current stories as well as great stuff from the archives. Today's piece on the scout who discovered Jeter is particularly interesting -- and so is the 1992 yearbook picture of an 18-year-old Jeter. A good one that emerged from over the weekend in Toronto is the view of broadcaster John Sterling, who has seen all 2,718 of Jeter's hits.
