>Man faces theft charge after refusing to pay for pop

NIAGARA FALLS -- A 24-year-old Town of Niagara man was charged with petit larceny early Sunday after he walked around Tops Market drinking a bottle of pop and then refused to pay for it.

Anthony M. Scarfone, of Anthony Drive, was arrested at about 2:40 a.m. at the store, 7200 Niagara Falls Blvd., according to a city police report.

Store employees called police when Scarfone tried to walk out without paying, the report said.


>Falls, Ont., man, 71, dies after bicycle collision

A 71-year-old Niagara Falls, Ont., man died Sunday from injuries suffered in a recent bicycle collision with another cyclist, Niagara Regional Police reported.

The accident occurred at 12:35 p.m. Thursday on Front Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The injured man, whom police did not identify, had been taken to Hamilton General Hospital for treatment.

The incident remains under investigation. Witnesses are asked to contact police at (905) 688-4111, Ext. 5500.


>Fort Erie woman held in hit-and-run death

A 37-year-old Fort Erie woman has been charged in the hit-and-run death of a man who was struck by a vehicle Aug. 30 while walking with a friend in Niagara Falls, Ont.

Elena Diono was held Sunday for a bail hearing in St. Catharines after being charged with criminal negligence causing death and failure to remain at the scene of a collision resulting in death, Niagara Regional Police reported.

Kevin Mounce, 30, of Oshawa, Ont., died Thursday from injuries suffered in the incident.

Mounce and a friend were walking on the sidewalk of Lundy's Lane at about 3 a.m. when a vehicle drove over the curb, hit Mounce from behind and pushed him into the road, police said. His friend narrowly missed being hit.

Authorities said witnesses came forward with information, particularly after Mounce's family made appeals for assistance through the media.
