The Canisius women's basketball team will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament, which begins Thursday at the Times Union Center in Albany.
The Griffs earned that position thanks to an easy 65-39 win over rival Niagara on Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Center. It was the Griffs' 22nd win of the season, setting a school Division I record. Senior Marie Warner had her 10th double-double of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds. The win was the 11th of the year at the KAC for Canisius, setting another school record.
Niagara ends the regular season a woeful 2-27, including 1-17 in the MAAC. The 10th-seeded Purple Eagles open the conference tournament at noon Thursday when they play No. 7 Rider in the first round. The Griffs await the winner of that game in the quarterfinals at 9:30 a.m. Friday.
A crowd of 1,450 was in attendance Saturday. The biggest draw, however, didn't seem to be the action on the court, but rather a halftime visit and postgame meet-and-greet with Moises Arias. Don't know who he is? Any of the hundreds of children at Saturday's game (those 12 and under were admitted free) would gladly tell you he's Rico from Disney's Hannah Montana.
