Erie Community College will be playing for a national championship.
The Kats advanced to the NJCAA title game with a 5-1 win over Mohawk Valley on Saturday at North Country Community College in Saranac Lake. Dan Wendt (Starpoint) and Nick Ferrentino (Lancaster) each had two goals and an assist as ECC, the nation's top-ranked team, will play Minot (N.D.) State University-Bottineau for the title at 2 p.m. today.
In Moon Township, Pa., Niagara skated to a scoreless tie with College Hockey America host Robert Morris (8-17-7; 4-7-5). It's the first 0-0 draw in the history of the Purple Eagles. Sophomore Adam Avramenko made 34 saves to earn his first career shutout for Niagara (15-13-4; 8-5-3), which clinched the No. 2 seed for the CHA Tournament with the tie.
NU faces Alabama-Huntsville on Friday at Dwyer Arena.
In Atlantic Hockey, Canisius dropped a 4-3 overtime decision at Mercyhurst. Cory Conacher, Adam Brace and Dave Kostuch scored for the Golden Griffins (14-14-6, 12-12-4), while Dan Morrison finished with a career-high 41 saves in the loss. Kostuch's power-play goal with 1:14 left forced overtime. Chris Risi pinballed a shot from the corner past Morrison 44 seconds into OT for the winner.
In women's play, senior Ashley Riggs had two goals and an assist in the final Dwyer Arena appearance of her career as Niagara rallied from a three-goal deficit to tie Robert Morris, 3-3, in the CHA. NU (5-24-5, 2-11-3) plays Syracuse in the first round of the conference tournament Thursday in Erie, Pa.
