Grace R. Phelan of South Buffalo, a retired secretary at Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School, died Monday in the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Cheektowaga, after a long illness. She was 94.
Born Grace Ridge in Buffalo, she attended Holy Family Elementary School and was a graduate of South Park High School.
During the 1930s, she worked as a secretary for the Home Loan Association, the federal government and the electric company. She was a secretary for more than 20 years in the library and the attendance office at Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School.
Known for her compassion and caring, she was president of the Mercy League at Mercy Hospital in the 1940s. She served numerous terms as president of the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
Her husband, Bernard M., died in 1968.
Surviving are two daughters, Margaret Mary "Margie" and Mary Evelyn Malachowski; a son, Patrick M.; and a sister, Evelyn Broderick.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 450 Abbott Road.
