Berline Schumpert, a musician who played piano and organ for many area churches, died Monday in Erie County Medical Center. She was 84.
Mrs. Schumpert was born in Ensley, Ala., and graduated from Parker High School in Birmingham.
She moved to Buffalo many years ago and became a highly sought-after musical accompanist for several local churches, including Calvary, Faith, Memorial and Open Door Baptist churches, and Lougen Memorial AME Zion and Mount Zion AME churches.
Mrs. Schumpert also provided musical accompaniment for the Eugene Lawrence Men's Chorus for many years. In addition, she served as Sunday school superintendent of Thankful Baptist Church.
Mrs. Schumpert was a dedicated volunteer at Erie County Medical Center, where she served as a senior companion for more than 20 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Frank and Jacqueline Fleming; and three sons, Bill Dill, Oliver Dill and Eugene "Charlie" Schumpert II.
Her funeral will be at noon Monday in Thankful Baptist Church, 197 Sumner Place.
