Free BPO concert scheduled at NCCC

LOCKPORT -- The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a free concert March 10 at Niagara County Community College in Sanborn to wrap up the county's yearlong 200th birthday celebration, the county Bicentennial Commission has announced.

The concert, starting at 7 p.m. in the NCCC Fine Arts Auditorium, will be conducted by Paul Ferington, a Somerset resident who is an NCCC professor emeritus. He has been guest conductor for the Philharmonic for 24 years and serves on the orchestra's board of trustees.

His program will include the famous first movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, which was composed in 1808, the same year Niagara County was formed.

Also featured will be a Sousa march written for the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo in 1901; music from one of the Harry Potter movies; excerpts from Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite"; and a work by Ferde Grofe, "Power of Niagara," which was written in 1961 to mark the opening of the Niagara Power Project.
