Overtime is costly to Canisius

Sean Erickson scored for Connecticut 43 seconds into overtime to defeat Canisius, 4-3, in their Atlantic Hockey game Saturday night in Storrs, Conn. The goal came as the teams were skating four a side.

Jason Weeks scored twice for the Golden Griffins, including the game-tying goal on the power play with 1:05 left in regulation. Cory Conacher gave the Griffs a 1-0 lead in the first period. Weeks' first goal with 1:10 left in the second period put Canisius in front, 2-1.

Andrew Loewen made 29 saves for Canisius (14-12-6, 12-10-4). It was the third time the teams had played overtime in their four meetings this season. UConn (8-25-1, 7-18-1) had lost the first two.

Buffalo State (10-11--4, 5-7-4) clinched a berth in the SUNYAC playoffs for the fourth straight year, with a 4-1 win over Brockport (13-9-3, 7-7-2) at the Sports Arena. Jason Hill (Niagara Falls) had two goals and two assists for the Bengals. Nicholas Petriello and Joel. Sheppard also scored for Buffalo State.

No. 6 seed Buffalo State will travel to No. 3 Geneseo for a SUNAYC quarterfinal game Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Mike Krywcum (St. Joe's) scored a goal and assisted on another and Bryan Kalczynski made 20 saves as Erie Community College defeated Hudson Valley CC, 4-0, at the Cheektowaga Recreation Center.

With the victory, the Kats (17-3-2, 11-2-2 Region III) clinched the top seed in the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament Feb. 28 in Saranac Lake.


Women's hockey

Jacqueline Spring of Niagara (4-24, 1-10-2 CHA) scored the first goal of the game at 1:48 but Mercyhurst went on to an 8-1 victory.
