Ash Wednesday at St. Benedict's

St. Benedict's Catholic Catholic Church, 1317 Eggert Road at Main Street, Amherst, will distribute ashes every 15 minutes from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Ash Wednesday. Masses will be offered at 7 and 8:40 a.m. and 7 p.m. There will be a special prayer service with ashes at noon.

"We realized that with people's work and school schedules, they might have a difficult time getting ashes," the Rev. Paul Sabo, senior parochial vicar, said.


Grace Lutheran Lenten events

Grace Lutheran Church, 174 Cazenovia St., will offer noon and evening Lenten events on Wednesdays beginning on Ash Wednesday. Ashes will be distributed at both the noon and 7:30 p.m. services Ash Wednesday.

Noon services will be followed by lunch. Starting March 4, evening services will begin with a soup supper at 6 p.m., followed by Bible study at 6:30 and a Taize service at 7:30. For information, call 822-0553.


Turner Gill to talk faith

University at Buffalo head football coach Turner Gill will share his personal testimony of faith at the Men's Breakfast at 8 a.m. today in Clarence United Methodist Church, 10205 Greiner Road, Clarence.


Positive image awards

Nominations are being accepted for the 2009 Positive Image Youth Awards, sponsored by the Youth and Education Boards of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 26 Brunswick Blvd.

Educators, clergy and business and community leaders are invited to nominate deserving youth in grades five through 12. Nominations close at noon next Friday. For forms and criteria, call 885-1108.


Explaining the Trinity

Dale Tuggy, philosophy professor at Fredonia State College, will offer a talk entitled "Is the Doctrine of the Trinity Incoherent?" at 6:30 p.m. March 1 in Christian Fellowship Church, 765 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst. Tuggy will examine recent criticisms of the doctrine of the Trinity and explain why they fail. Questions and discussion will follow. The public is welcome. Refreshments will be served.


Magnificat breakfast

Magnificat-Buffalo, a ministry to Catholic women, will host a breakfast with testimony and prayer at 9:30 a.m. March 14 in the Holiday Inn, 1881 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst. Featured speaker will be Tracy Tremblay, founder of Quiet Waters Productions. Women do not need to be Magnificat members to attend. Deadline for reservations is March 1. Call 773-5976.


Parishes hold Lenten retreat

St. Agatha's Catholic Church, 65 Abbott Road, will hold its annual Novena of Grace from March 4 to 12. St. Ambrose and Holy Family parishes will co-sponsor this Lenten retreat experience. For information, call 822-5962.

The schedule includes The Grace of God's Presence with Deacon Thomas Forcucci at 7 p.m. March 4; The Grace of Prayer with Father James Cunningham, administrator of Holy Family Parish, at 7 p.m. March 5; The Grace of Perseverance with Monsignor David Lee of St. Agatha's at 7 p.m. March 6; The Grace of the Word with Monsignor Lee at 4 p.m. Mass on March 7; and The Grace of the Eucharist with Monsignor Lee at 10 a.m. Mass on March 8.

Also, The Grace of Forgiveness, a book review of "Amish Grace" with Sister Fran Gangloff, at 7 p.m. March 9; The Grace of Relationships with Judy and Bill Miller, members of the team for the Retrovaille Movement, at 7 p.m. March 10; The Grace of Healing with Mary Kienzle, vice president for Mission Integration at Mercy Hospital, at 7 p.m. March 11; and The Grace of Hope with Father Michael Putich, a Franciscan friar and administrator of St. Clare's Parish, at 7 p.m. March 12.


Prayer Day event

Church Women United of the Tonawandas will celebrate the World Day of Prayer at 1 p.m. March 6 in North Presbyterian Church, 168 Payne Ave., North Tonawanda. The theme of the program is "In Christ, There Are Many Members, Yet One Body." Refreshments will follow the service. The public is invited.


Dayspring dinner set

Dayspring Church of God of Prophecy, Dorris and Bailey avenues, will hold its Dinner for Royalty at 5:30 p.m. March 7 at Ilio DiPaolo's Restaurant, 3785 South Park Ave., Blasdell. Lenten vespers set

A Lenten vespers service will be held at 3 p.m. March 15 in Holy Mother of the Rosary Cathedral, 6298 Broadway, Lancaster. Following vespers, there will be a musical program. A reception will follow. The public is welcome. For information, call 685-5766.
