This Day in Buffalo Sports History -- Sugar Ray comes to town

Feb. 15, 1949 -- Most people don't remember that Sugar Ray Robinson once fought in Buffalo's Memorial Auditorium.

Not only that, but he didn't win here. And that was quite unusual.

Robinson came to town as the welterweight champion of the world, sporting a 90-1-1 record in his career. His opponent in the nontitle bout was Henry Brimm. Robinson and Brimm fought to a draw.

Sugar Ray might have been tired. He had fought Gene Buffalo -- honest! -- in Wilkes Barre, Penn., only five days before his Buffalo bouts.
