Live blogging from UMass vs. St. Bonaventure

Bona 83, UMass 75, final: Bona held UMass to just two field goals in the final 2:53 to tuck this one away. They also made six consecutive free throws in the final 38.6 seconds. Thomas and Matthews finished with 18 points each, while Tony Gaffney had a game-high 21 points and 11 boards.

Bona 79, UMass 73, 26.7 second left: Matthews hit two free throws before Harris missed an ugly runner. Matthews is back at the line but it looks like the Bonnies have this one.

Bona 77, UMass 73, 41.9 seconds left: Nicholson dunked off a feed from Eleby then Harris missed a shot underneath. Bona fed Nicholson again but he missed and after a scramble for the rebound the ball went out of bounds. Ref called a jump ball and the possession arrow pointed to Bona.

Bona 75, UMass 73, 1:44 left: Harris hit two free throws, but Chris Matthews answered with a three-pointer to give Bona the lead. Nicholson partially blocked a layup by Chris Lowe to give Bona the ball with 1:44 left. The Bonnies just called time out.

Bona 71, UMass 71, 3:31 left: This is shaping up to be a good one. Gaffney and Thomas are going back and forth. Gaffney has 19 points and Thomas has 18.

Bona 62, UMass 61, 7:51 left: D'Lancy Carter's layup gave the Bonnies the lead but it's Maurice Thomas who is heating up with eight of his team-high 17 points in the second half. The Bonnies are doing much better holding onto the ball and have only two turnovers.

UMass 55, Bona 52, 11:44 left: Two steals by Jonathan Hall led to Bona baskets and has the RC fired up. Hall's basket cut the lead to one but Maurice Thomas was just hit for a technical foul for delay of game and Harris made both free throws.

UMass 50, Bona 44: Eleby is being much more aggressive offensively and now has eight points. Everything flows so much better with Nicholson in the lineup because he has to be double teamed leaving someone open to hit a jumper. Still, the Bonnies have given up a couple of layups to start the half and need to defend better.

UMass 38, Bona 31, halftime: The Bonnies are having a difficult time guarding Ricky Harris and Tony Gaffney, who have 10 points each. The second half has to be about protecting the basketball - Bona has 11 turnovers - defending the three-point line - UMass is 4 of 12 - and finding a way to put the ball in the hole from long range where they are 0 for 8. UMass obviously figures Malcolm Eleby is shaky with the basketball because they try and trap him each time down the floor.

UMass 36, Bona 29 with 2:06 left in the first half: UMass is 4-for-10 from three-point range while Bona is 0-for-6. Maurice Thomas, Tyler Benson, Da'Quan Cook and Andrew Nicholson all have two fouls forcing Schmidt to go to his bench.

UMass 25, Bona 21: Blackburn, who missed several games with a knee injury, seems to have pretty good bounce tonight. The offense flows better with Blackburn on the floor. Lynch just threw a sweet no look pass to Tony Gaffney for a dunk. The refs have a quick whistle tonight as nine fouls have already been called on the Bonnies. I would be surprised if Mark Schmidt isn't called for a technical foul before the night is done.

UMass 15, Bona 12: Turnovers are hindering the Bonnies and they already have five. The game is close because UMass has four turnovers and is sloppy with the ball as well. Fouls are also starting to pile up and three players already have two fouls and UMass is in the 1-and-1.

UMass 13, Bona 6 with 15:51 left in the first half: Andrew Nicholson was called for traveling then was hit for a technical foul for arguing the call although I didn't see Nicholson say anything to the ref. Former Niagara Falls High School big man Tyrell Lynch just checked into the game and immediately scored on a layup as he was fouled. Ray Blackburn is at the scorer's table for Bona.
