Belfast golf course targeted to become recreational resort

An Irish development group is targeting a Southern Tier golf course for an $80 million resort project.

The Sawyers Group, which recently purchased the Six-S Golf Course in Belfast, N.Y., this week unveiled an ambitious plan to turn the property into Waterways Resort, featuring golf, tennis, fishing, skiing, equestrian activities and a spa. The proposed 250-acre Waterways Resort would also include a 200-unit vacation home community.

This will be the first U.S. venture for the Sawyers Group, which has a diverse portfolio of real estate and other investments in Europe. Those holdings include a golf resort, winery and television station in Bulgaria, as well as properties in Ireland and Spain.

In announcing its plans, the Sawyers Group said it chose Western New York for its first U.S. project to take advantage of the four-season environment.

The group plans to kick-off the three-to-five-year Waterways project this spring with construction of model homes. Sawyer Group is teaming with New England Cedar Homes to offer luxury two- and three-bedroom homes priced between $215,000 and $400,000.

Additional amenities will include be free transport for nights out to the nearby casino, coach tours to Niagara Falls, Toronto, Buffalo and surrounding wine country. The resort will also offer free pick-up service to and from the airport.
