If you like the idea of going for a run with your sweetheart on the morning of Valentine's Day, then Western New York is definitely the place to be on Saturday. The racing calendar is quite packed by February standards, especially when compared to last week's empty ledger.
A highlight is the Lockport Y-10. That one usually is quite a challenge, thanks in part to conditions that are usually cold and windy (I've heard horror stories about gusts across open fields). It's also a long way to run this "early" in the season, especially with the bad weather we had until this week. But those who like this race, love it. It has added a 5-mile run this year for those who prefer a smaller challenge.
Meanwhile, there are a couple of 5K's on the schedule as well. The Dash for the Dome goes around the Botanical Gardens, which is the ideal place for a postrace party -- it's 72 degrees inside. The Alden Black Water Baths race will be held as well.
* One personal note -- I received a call last week telling me about a planned race for December. That's right, December. When I told the caller that I wasn't sure what I'd be doing on Sunday, let alone December, she said it was a "save the date" call. Somebody is REALLY organized.
