An independently-owned grocery serving East Aurora for the past 50 years will soon close.
Owner Dan Canale confirmed Thursday that the Jubilee Food Store on Grey Street will shutter by March 1. A steep drop in sales began this summer when fuel costs skyrocketed and worsened amidst the economic downturn.
Canale said his main concern is finding replacement work for some of the store's 60 employees, many of whom have been with the company for years. He has scheduled time for representatives from Tops Markets to interview interested workers.
Jubilee started out as a Super Duper grocery during the early 1950s and was converted to a Jubilee in 1992. Canale bought the store three years ago.
"This community has been extremely supportive. I feel like I'm letting them down because we did offer an alternative to the big box stores," he said. "The economy is just catching up with us."
