Uncertainties herald March 3 budget workshop

The Eden Central School Board has scheduled its first budget workshop for March 3, but uncertainty about some revenue sources is impacting the process, School Superintendent Ronald Buggs said Wednesday night.

Calling the tentative 2009-10 budget a "work in progress," Buggs stressed the budget could not be firmed up until more information about possible federal stimulus aid is known. He estimated the increase in spending at about 3 percent and raised the possibility of layoffs.

Board ponders purchase of improved radio system

A new radio transmission system that would dramatically improve reception and cost little was displayed during a work session of the Elma Town Board on Wednesday night.

Supervisor Michael Nolan said, "The town has an opportunity to jump on this with [$30,500 in funds left over] from the October storm grant of $135,000." The demonstration of the equipment was offered by town Disaster Coordinator Ed Sauer and Mike Saia of Saia Communications.
