Dr. John W. Richardson, Hamburg optometrist, photographer Feb. 17, 1929 -- Feb. 2, 2009

A private family service was held for Dr. John W. Richardson, a retired optometrist and photographer. He died of bladder cancer Feb. 2 in his Village of Hamburg home. He was 79.

Dr. Richardson was born in Lackawanna. He was a graduate of Hamburg High School and attended Canisius College and Ohio State University, where he received a doctorate in optometry.

It was at Ohio State, where he met his wife of 55 years, the former Ellen Wagner.

He served in the Korean War, where he did eye exams in the 121st EVAC Hospital for the Army. It was there that he found his love for photography, bringing his camera everywhere he went.

He returned to Hamburg and began working as an optometrist, eventually opening his own practice on Buffalo Street.

Dr. Richardson was president of the Hamburg Rotary and was a Rotarian from 1963 until 2007. For many years, he was a firefighter for the Hamburg Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of the Hamburg Lions.

He received many awards for his photographs, such as from competitions at the Erie County Fair. He mostly took pictures of flowers, exotic wildlife and fish, as well as friends and family who visited the Richardsons at the family cottage on Chautauqua Lake.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, John Jr., James and Peter, and two brothers, William and Roy.
