The Art of Beer 2009 is on tap for Feb. 27.
The third annual event showcases craft brewers and local beer artisans, with live music, brewery art collections, and food from area restaurants. Flying Bison, Alternative Brews and the Buffalo Brew Pub will be pouring, among others.
The event supports the Niagara Arts & Cultural Center, 1201 Pine Ave., Niagara Falls, where it sprawls over two floors of the former high school. The American Cancer Society is another beneficiary.
Tickets $20 advance, $25 door, and include a souvenir tasting glass and samples of beer and food.
Call 282-7530 for more information, or tickets.
Encore has opened its doors in the Theatre District space formerly occupied by Hemingway's, at 492 Pearl St.
Chef Christopher Daigler, who formerly ran the kitchen at Oliver's, is in charge.
The dinner menu cuts across categories, from a lobster pot pie to coq a vin and grilled flatiron steak. The more adventurous bar menu offers diners Daigler's take on poutine, pulled barbecued beef. There's even sushi, home to the expected (spicy tuna roll), and the not-so-common (Buffalo chicken wing roll).
For more information, call 931-5001.
If you've been looking to expand your diet, species-wise, head over the border to Niagara Parks Bug-a-licious Insect Food Festival, Feb. 14 to 16.
The event, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, will include demonstrations of cooking with insects and samplings of recipes from Chef Jeff Stewart's special "Out of Africa" menu.
It's at the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory, 2405 Niagara Parkway, Niagara Falls, Ont. Tickets $6.80 to $11.50 Canadian.
