The Rev. Joseph F. Paa, a Catholic priest for 67 years and longtime pastor of St. Martin Church in Langford, died Wednesday. He was 93.
The Buffalo native was a graduate of Little Seminary of St. Joseph and the Little Flower and Niagara University. He studied theology at Our Lady of the Angels Seminary at Niagara and was ordained in 1941 by Bishop John A. Duffy in St. Joseph's New Cathedral.
Father Paa's first appointment was in the Diocese of St. Augustine, where he served as part of the Florida apostolate before becoming an assistant pastor at St. Joseph Church in Niagara Falls and later Holy Cross in Buffalo.
He served as an assistant at St. Bernard in Buffalo; SS. Peter & Paul in Hamburg; Our Lady Help of Christians in Cheektowaga; and St. Mary Magdalene in Buffalo.
In 1950, he was chaplain at Children's Hospital and Columbus Hospital. His first pastorate was at St. Joseph in Varysburg in 1963.
He was appointed pastor of St. Martin in 1965, a post he held until his retirement in 1991.
Survivors include his brother, who is also a Catholic priest, the Rev. Donald R., and a sister, Jean M.
Bishop Edward U. Kmiec will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Saturday in Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 8500 Main St., Harris Hill.
