The Buffalo-based Eastern sectional entry in the United States Tennis Association's National Masters (over 50) championships fell just short in its effort to advance to the national semifinals last week in Palm Springs, Calif.

The local team lost the deciding match, 2-1, to the eventual national champion, Middle-States of Philadelphia.

Captained by Jon Nichols, the members of the Buffalo team were: Mark Abels, Mark Ahrens, Larry Buck, Damian Courtin, Doren Goldstone, Tom LaPenna, Dave Mosgeller, Kosta Pozantidis, Earl Tomkins and Harold Schnitzer.

BASKETBALL: There will be Gus Macker organizational meeting Nov. 5 at Olean High School, 410 West Sullivan Street from 6-8 p.m. The committee is looking for people to assist in the planning and development for next year's event scheduled for Aug. 14-16 in Olean.

FOOTBALL: There will be a Bills vs. Patriots Party on Nov. 9 at the Hearthstone Manor, 333 Dick Road in Depew, from noon to 6 p.m. The pre-event donation is $20 while the day-of donation is $30. GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Buffalo Defenders is having open tryouts Nov. 2 at St. Mary's School for the Deaf, 2253 Main Street, Buffalo. Times are 9-10:30 a.m. for age 13; 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for ages 15-16; 1:30-3 p.m. for age 14 and 3:30-5 p.m. for age 12 (all ages as of July 1).
