>Victim reports beating, robbery by 3 masked men

NIAGARA FALLS -- Three masked men jumped, beat and robbed a 16th Street man as he walked home from a corner store Friday evening, police said.

The 44-year-old victim told police he was in an alley between 16th and 17th streets when he was accosted just after 6 p.m. The attackers, wearing bandannas over their faces, hit him over the head with a blunt object, then punched him several times before stealing $388 in cash from him.

The man was not seriously injured during the attack and was able to identify one of his assailants, police said.


>Hit-run driver strikes two men, killing one

NIAGARA FALLS -- A hit-run driver killed a Niagara Falls man early Sunday at Walnut Avenue and 19th Street, police report.

Emergency responders found Mark Milczarski, 38, of Ferry Avenue, and Eduardo M. Ortiz, 40, also of Niagara Falls, lying in the street at about 1 a.m., Niagara Falls police said.

Milczarski was pronounced dead at the scene. Ortiz was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses told police the two had just left a convenience store when a red vehicle hit them and fled west on Walnut without stopping. At 2:30 a.m., a car matching the description of the hit-run vehicle was found ablaze and without license plates on Blacknose Spring Road in Lewiston.

>Bad check used in try to buy $5,340 in goods

NIAGARA FALLS -- A man fled from the Home Depot store on Builder's Way after trying to purchase $5,340 worth of merchandise with a bad check, police said. He was apprehended by state police later Saturday afternoon on the Thruway and was held for questioning.

Officials from the Falls store told police that the man attempted to buy tools, clothing and miscellaneous items just before 2 p.m., and after being told his check was no good, claimed to be going to his car to get a credit card. He instead drove off in a rental truck with a store employee in pursuit.

Home Depot officials told police that two other area stores, in Buffalo and Hamburg, had been victimized earlier Saturday for $15,000 worth of purchases made with bad checks. State Police investigators were attempting to determine if the cases were related and what charges should be lodged in the case.


>Woman, 20, stabbed in leg during argument at party

NIAGARA FALLS -- A 20-year-old woman was stabbed in the leg at a Pierce Avenue house party early Saturday, police said.

The victim, a Dawn Drive resident, told police that she and another woman argued at about 3:30 a.m., when she was stabbed in the leg. She was treated in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, where two staples were applied to close the wound, police said.


>Police question owner in torching of SUV

NIAGARA FALLS -- Police are investigating the torching of a 2005 Ford Explorer at a Memorial Parkway residence that was heavily damaged at about 11 a.m. Saturday.

Witnesses told police they saw a man get out of a black pickup truck and pour gas over the SUV. A few moments later, the $13,000 vehicle was in flames, police said.

The owner was not home at the time, police said, but later pulled up in a black pickup truck identified by witnesses as the one at the scene earlier.
