Consumer Reports' November issue of Shop Smart outlined some of the most and least reliable brand names.
The following were among the worst, meaning they needed repair more often than other brands:
Gas Clothes Dryers: Frigidaire. Differences among Electric models weren't significant
Front-Loading Clothes Washers: Maytag. I guess that Maytag man better get to work, huh?
Electric Cooktops: Jenn-Air
Gas Cooktops: Dacor and Viking
Refrigerators: Maytag, GE and Sub-Zero (varying across several different types of models).
Ranges: Gas--Amana, KitchenAid and Maytag; Electric--Jenn-Air and KitchenAid.
Cars: Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz (Honda, Subaru and Toyota scored among the MOST reliable).
Laptops: Makers all scored about the same, but laptops remain the most problematic, repair-prone item of all those tracked by Consumer Reports. Desktop computers fared better, but not much. Only Apple scored well enough to be considered reliable.
Televisions: Hitachi bottomed out as the worst of the LCDs, while Philips brought things down on the plasma side.
Camcorders: Canon, JVC and Samsung MiniDVs scored lowest.
Digital Cameras: In a refreshing change of pace, most of the major brands proved reliable across the board, remaining one of the most consistently satisfactory products tracked.
