ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- It seems like the New York Mets are getting closer to naming Ken Oberkfell as the Bisons' manager for 2009. Oberkfell has been reassigned within the minor-league system after serving the second half of the season as the team's interim first-base coach under Jerry Manuel.
It would be a good thing for the Herd to have an ex-big leaguer like Oberkfell in the dugout. He's got 14 years experience as a minor-league mananger and has gone to the Triple-A playoffs with Norfolk (2005) and New Orleans (2007). The kicker will be to see if Oberkfell wants to see what other options he might have outside of the Mets' chain.
Not a true demotion since he was a midseason fill-in after the firing of Willie Randolph, but still has to be disappointing to Oberkfell nonetheless.
