ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Was just down on the field to watch some batting practice and ran into old friend Andy Freed, now one of the Rays' radio announcers. I used to bump into Freed, who's just a great guy, over many summer and winter nights when he was serving as the radio voice for the Pawtucket Red Sox and Rider University basketball.
He pursued his dreams of the big leagues and came to Tampa in 2005. He told me the job was great even in those days although the then-Devil Rays were big losers with Lou Piniella at the helm. And what about now? A wide-eyed Freed looked around the Trop at a field covered with national and international media and said he was almost speechless.
"We're supposed to have words for all this. That's what we do," my friend said. "Well, I've run out of them. There's no way to describe this."
