Ford Motor Co. has extended buyout offers once again to workers at its Hamburg stamping plant, a sign that the automaker is pushing hard to reduce its production work force. Members of the United Auto Workers at the Hamburg site were offered buyouts and early-retirement packages earlier this year. More recently, Ford came back with another round of the same offers at selected plants, but it wasn't until last week that the Hamburg plant was added to the list.
It is no doubt a tough call for workers weighing the offers, given the state of the economy and the continuing slump in vehicle sales. And while the size of the plant's work force has shrunk over the years, the high-paying jobs are a key part of the region's auto manufacturing sector.
