Week Seven Saturday: On to the sectionals

Maybe not the drama of Friday night, but Saturday (read the roundup) still provided plenty to chew on as we head to Week Eight and the Section VI tournament (see previous post):

We had a Harvard Cup record running day, a supersub steping up in a rivalry game, a division champion learning a lot after a tough test and last year's top Monsignor Martin small school showing they might be this year's as well (all those are in posts from this morning, which are linked at the right).

Here are some more nuggets:

Grand Island coach Dean Santorio on his quarterfinal matchup:

"We played Cheektowaga last year in the playoffs, so we know each other a little bit. We expect  them to play tough. I'ts nice to have a home game. I just hope we continue to execute and play well on both sides. We're looking forward to it."

Another week, another annihilation for Maple Grove, which was up 39-0 at halftime in a 56-7 win at Pine Valley Saturday night.

Chris Secky was 3 for 5 for 29 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown to Joe Caporale, and the quarterback also had a 15-yard touchdown run and was 8 for 8 on extra points.

Jake Larson had seven carries for 102 yards and three touchdowns while Adam Hover had nine rushes for 113 yards.

Senior Brandon Fain blocked two punts, had a fumble recovery and six tackles while Travis Leburg had 10 tackles and a fumble recovery.

The reason Canisius' box score isn't in today's paper is because the school failed to have all the information for a box score. The complete box is here if anyone is interested.

Let's review: Schools are responsible for calling the entire box score in, with all names, or it doesn't run.

Harvard Cup boosters have to like how a one-win team in their league, East, delivered a 60-0 win against a Monsignor Martin team in Niagara Catholic (2-4). Jason Oden had two interceptions for East.

• • •

Nate Meier ran for 131 yards and a touchdown on nine carries while freshman Patrick Walch had 17 tackles for Wilson (2-5) in a 20-6 win over winless Newfane. Ethan Baker had 10 tackles and a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown for the Lakemen.

• • •

Jacob Saulsgiver (161 yards, 21 carries) helped Panama (4-3) beat West Valley (3-4) in the game (28-14) and a Class D playoff spot. Ben Boberg had 108 yards on 24 carries for West Valley.

A.J. Reid had 117 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries and caught a third touchdown as Sherman held on for a 28-26 win over Hinsdale in an exciting battle of teams searching for their first win. Hinsdale (0-7) fought back from a 28-8 halftime deficit with three touchdowns, but Sherman (1-6) halted all three of their two-point conversion attempts. Steve Keith and Corey Sands were the key defenders who helped stop the third conversion try.

Hinsdale's Brian MacNeal ran for all three of the Bobcats' second-half touchdowns and also had seven completions for 114 yards, including a touchdown.
