Saturday, Oct. 18 will be a busy day for hunters in Western New York areas in the DEC's Southern Zone, which comprises all of WNY.
At sunrise, seasons open for archery bow hunting, wild turkey, pheasant, and bear hunter with a bow in areas of the Allegany Region. New management areas have been opened to bear hunting this season. Check the 2008-2009 DEC Hunting Guide for specific areas that are open.
Regular duck and Canada goose season begins Oct. 25 in the Western Zone for waterfowlers.
The regular gun season for deer begins Nov. 15, but the gun season for black bears will not start until Nov. 22 in areas open to bear hunting.
Woodcock season continues to Nov. 4. All other small game seasons are open an close at varying dates in 2008 and 2009. Check the DEC guide for specifics or go to www.nys.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/hunting/html, which lists all seasons and provides places to hunt around the state.
