Catholic Health appointed Dr. Michael F. Galang chief information officer, effective Nov. 1. Dr. Galang, a family practice physician, will close his private practice in Orchard Park. Dr. Galang served most recently as the chief medical information officer for Catholic Health's Equinox initiative, a post he will maintain. He holds a master's degree in health care management from Harvard University and is completing a master's degree in medical informatics at Northwestern University. He received his medical degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. He received degrees in biology and drama at the University of California, San Diego.

Five Star Bank appointed William Kershner assistant vice president. Kershner joined the bank in November 2004 and has served as loan review specialist since November of 2006. He is a management science graduate of Geneseo State College.

Synacor, a Buffalo Internet tools and portals builder, appointed Nicole Schuman a content publisher, Andrew Kucserik vendor relations manager, and Kevin McCall junior accountant. Previously, Schuman was a marketing communications strategist with VoIP Supply/Sayers Technology Holdings. She is a graduate of St. Bonaventure Univeristy and holds a master's from the University at Buffalo. Kucserik previously was a partner relations manager with Pulse 360. He is a Buffalo State College graduate. McCall, a Canisius College graduate, previously was a certified tax preparer with H&R Block. Also, the company transitioned Laura Casillo to senior financial analyst.

Eric Mower and Associates, a marketing communications agency with offices in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany; Charlotte, N.C.; Atlanta, and Sarasota, Fla., promoted Stephen W. Bell to director of public affairs in Western New York. Bell joined the agency two years ago as senior counselor after serving as editorial page editor, managing editor, city editor and business editor at The Buffalo News. He earned a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College and a master's degree in European history from the University at Albany.

Buffalo Engineering, a Buffalo mechanical, electrical, plumbing and energy consulting firm, promoted David J. Ketchum to principal. Ketchum, who has more than 30 years HVAC, plumbing and fire protection engineering expertise, joined the firm in 2005. He has a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Rochester. Also, the firm named Michael J. Miranda business development coordinator; Margaret J. Liszewski marketing coordinator; Jane Meier administrative assistant; Attiq Rahman and Brendan Yadav energy engineers; and Jeff Gump draftsman.

Tops Friendly Markets appointed Mary Lewalski director of deli and bakery. Lewalski has been with the company for 33 years, previously serving as a product specialist, merchandiser and buyer, and marketing manager. She earned an associate's degree from Erie Community College.

Independent Health, an Amherst-headquartered health plan provider, named Cindy Blue director, sales administration, and Peggy Schifferle director, account services. Blue has more than 20 years industry experience. She joined the company in 2001. Most recently, Blue was director, self-funded claims and ancillary business operations. Schifferle, who joined the company in 1987, has more than 20 years experience. She most recently was manager, account services. Schifferle earned a bachelor's degree in communications from Canisius College.
