>Board holds line on taxes in approving 2009 budget

The Holland Town Board approved the 2009 budget that holds the line on taxes.

General fund expenses of $742,524 are down, reflecting a tax rate of 57 cents per $1,000 of assessed value, compared with $1.27 this year. The highway budget is $888,628, reflecting a tax rate of $2.92 per $1,000 of assessed value -- up from last year's rate of $2.63 per $1,000.

However, the garbage fee is rising from $126 per household to $172.50 in 2009. Officials blamed a newly negotiated garbage contract with Modern.

Included in the budget is a 2 percent salary increase for elected officials.
