OLAF FUB SEZ: According to South African cleric Bishop Desmond Tutu, born on this date in 1931, "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality."


RIVIERA GALA -- A chance to help the historic Riviera Theatre in North Tonawanda comes at 6 p.m. Thursday, when the Friends of the Riviera hold an October Night Out to help turn the building next door to the theater into handicapped-accessible restrooms, dressing rooms and rehearsal space.

It begins at 6 p.m. in Crazy Jake's, just up the street from the theater at 94 Webster St., with hors d'oeuvres, live music and a silent auction. At 9 p.m., the fun moves to the Riv for a silent film and a mini organ concert. Tickets are $25 at the theater box office, Crazy Jake's, the Chamber of Commerce of the Tonawandas or by calling 692-2413.


BUMPER CROP -- There will be more than apples at the Apple Festival from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Covenant United Methodist Church, 539 Main St., West Seneca. Chairman Denis Barham reports that roast beef, turkey and barbecue pork sandwiches will be served, along with salt potatoes and coleslaw. The apple part includes homemade apple crisp, apple pie, cider and home-baked apple goods.


HERE'S THE BEEF -- St. John's Lutheran Church, 3512 Clinton St., West Seneca, holds another family-style roast beef dinner at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Tickets are $9 for adults, $5 for children. Kids under 3 eat free, but pie isn't included.


THE EYES HAVE IT -- Anthone Eye Center, 2211 Sheridan Drive at Belmont Avenue, Town of Tonawanda, is celebrating World Sight Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday by giving free eye tests to low-income people in Erie and Niagara counties. But to get one, you must call 634-6100 first for an appointment.
