USA Track and Field's 5-kilometer championships were held in Syracuse on Sunday morning, and several local runners made the trip up for the race. Chris Mattingly of Orchard Park finished third in an impressive 15:36, while Amy Fakterowitz of Williamsville cracked the top 10 with a 19:09. Meanwhile, Henry Sypniewski of Cheektowaga was the media star; he ran an impressive 33:46 in-between doing several interviews.
I hope to have more on the race in my next column, as I took part in the event (they'll let anyone with an entry fee run). But I'll add this: It was billed as a very fast course, and based on the 20 men who broke 16 minutes, I'd say the organizers were right.
