Youth Police Academy to be held Oct. 18

The 14th annual Youth Police Academy for seventh- and eighth-grade students will be held Oct. 18, Buffalo Police Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson announced.

Organized by the Citizen Advisory Group to the Police Commissioner, the one-day academy will be held at Police Headquarters at 74 Franklin St.

The academy will include information about forensics, gangs, graffiti, new police technology, conflict resolution, drug court and skits by the Buffalo Police Explorer's post.

The event is sponsored by the Buffalo Police Foundation and the FBI Foundation under the auspices of the West Side Community Center.

Applications are available at all City of Buffalo public, private and charter middle schools and via the Girl Scouts. The first 100 applicants will be admitted. For more information, call 851-4523.

Ceremony set Monday to open renovated gym

The public is invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. Monday in the George H. Miller gym at Tonawanda High School.

The ceremony culminates the completion of a $6.6 million capital project to improve and update the middle school-high school complex.

Two major highlights of the project include the complete renovation of the Miller gym along with the full reconstruction of the tennis courts by Occhino Corporation.

Both facilities are frequently used by community groups and City of Tonawanda residents.

Other renovation highlights include the replacement of the 130,000-square-foot roof and classroom upgrades.

Bowman to speak at Compeer gala

Scotty Bowman, the winningest coach in National Hockey League history, will be the keynote speaker Oct. 18 at Compeer of Greater Buffalo's 10th annual gala, the Miracle of Friendship, in Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. Compeer enlists friends and mentors to help children and adults with mental health issues.

The gala also will honor the Walsh family of the Walsh Insurance Group for their philanthropy and dedication to Compeer. Larry Playfair, president of the Buffalo Sabres Alumni Association, will accept the Spirit of Compeer Award in recognition of the association's charitable work.

The evening also will include a VIP and cocktail reception, with a wine tasting hosted by the Niagara Wine Trail, and jazz by the Billy Baroo Trio.
