A Niagara County man died and his two children were injured about 3 p.m. Saturday in a head-on collision on Maple Ridge Road.
James R. Ellegate, 44, of Middleport, was pronounced dead at the scene by Orleans County Coroner Charles M. Smith.
Ellegate's two children -- James Jr., 8, and Nicole, 5, who were riding in the rear seat of their father's 1967 Mustang -- were taken by ambulance to Medina Memorial Hospital, then flown to Women & Children's Hospital, Buffalo, by Mercy Flight. Orleans County sheriff's deputies said their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. A hospital spokeswoman declined to provide information.
Deputies said a car driven by Harry A. Kurbs, 79, of Lockport, which was eastbound on Maple Ridge, crossed into the opposite lane and struck the Ellegate vehicle.
Kurbs and his wife, Mary, 74, were taken to Lockport Memorial Hospital. Deputies listed their condition as guarded. A hospital spokeswoman declined to provide any information.
Undersheriff Steven D. Smith said the accident remains under investigation but said it did not appear to be the result of excessive speed, alcohol or drugs.
