Watkins Glen International gets a prime spot on next year's IndyCar Series television schedule as one of five races which will be shown on ABC, the network announced Tuesday.
The Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen on July 5, 2009, which will also have an earlier start of 1 p.m., will be broadcast on ABC along with the Indy 500 and races at Iowa, Milwaukee and Toronto (the Toronto will be the week after the race at The Glen). The other 13 races will be shown on Versus -- not just next year but for the next nine years. All races -- on either network -- will be broadcast live and in HD.
The Glen has to love being one of very few races on network TV. The IndyCar Series will also likely benefit by having a regular home at Versus, where it will get more prerace coverage as well as an hour preview show the day before. IndyCar races on ESPN networks often seemed, understandably, like they were getting crammed in and short shrifted considering all of the other programming of the "worldwide leader."
