Calspan's new counterpart

Calspan Corp. sees some of itself in Flight Systems, the California-based unit of BAE Systems that Calspan has just agreed to buy.

A few years ago, Calspan, based in Western New York, was a small part of defense contractor General Dynamics, which had acquired Calspan from Veridian. Since a locally led buyout in 2005, the current Calspan ownership team has been able to bring back a strategic focus to the operations.

Similarly, Flight Systems has been part of United Kingdom-based BAE, a massive defense and aerospace company, as a result of industry mergers.

Calspan thinks Flight Systems will have a greater opportunity to reach its full potential as a Calspan division, with more of a focus on what it does best. And that additional growth could lead to more jobs at Calspan in the Buffalo area.
