The last four stores in the Buffalo and Rochester areas that adopted the
Martin's Super Food Stores name are switching back to the Tops Markets
banner, a reflection of the Tops chain's change in ownership and orientation.
The use of the Martin's format at some stores was initiated when Tops was
run as part of Giant of Carlisle, Pa., under Ahold's ownership. The Martin's
name is used on stores that are part of the Ahold family in other states, but
it was unfamiliar to WNY shoppers.
Frank Curci, who recently returned as Tops' CEO, says it was part of the new
leadership's plan to run all of its stores under one brand name. The change
affects only four of Tops' 71 company-owned stores, but it is an indication
of how the chain's new ownership intends to capitalize on the long-established
Tops name as it sets a new direction.
