Apartment building fire slightly injures two

TOWN OF NIAGARA -- Two residents suffered injuries that were not life-threatening Sunday night in a fire that forced the evacuation of residents from half a dozen apartments.

Town of Niagara police received numerous calls at 8:42 p.m. reporting the fire at the Royal Park Apartments on Porter Road. The first officers at the scene reported heavy smoke coming from the roof line of the apartment building.

Unsure whether any residents were trapped, Officer Pat Dworak and Niagara County Sheriff's Deputies Frank Peplowski and Aaron Schultz entered six smoke-filled apartments to check for occupants. All apartments had been evacuated, they discovered.

The Niagara Active Hose and Upper Mountain fire companies contained the fire to Apartment 111, whose resident, Yousef Omar, 41, was treated at the scene for burns on his right hand. Jean Barto, 85, an occupant of another apartment, was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for treatment of a shoulder injury suffered while she was being removed from her apartment.

Careless use of a candle sparked the fire, investigators determined.
