Pfc. Dwane A. Covert, victim of noncombat explosion in Iraq July 30, 1987 -- Nov. 3, 2007

A funeral with full military honors for Army Pfc. Dwane A. Covert Jr., 20, who died last Saturday in Iraq in an explosion during a non-combat incident, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Amigone Funeral Home, 2600 Sheridan Drive, Town of Tonawanda.

Pfc. Covert is the father of a 22-month-old son, Cameron J., and a second child his wife, the former Jeanette L. Darnley of the Town of Tonawanda, is due to give birth to next month.

He was a 2005 graduate of Kenmore East High School.

Before joining the Army in October 2006, he worked as a sales associate at Advance Auto Parts in North Tonawanda and Cyber Jocks in Amherst.

He completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C., and went on to advanced individual training at Fort Bliss, Texas.

As a youngster, he was active in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.

Pfc. Covert, a member of the 104th Transportation Company, 13th Corps, Support Sustainment Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Benning, Ga., was fatally injured when he and other soldiers were cleaning up debris around a military base in Al-Sahra.

Other survivors include his parents, Dwane A. Sr. and Teresa M.; a sister, Jennifer LaFratta; and a brother, Matthew C.

Memorials may be made to the Cameron J. Covert Trust Fund at the Bank of Akron.
