Low-income seniors eligible for farmers' market coupons
OLEAN -- Cattaraugus County's low-income senior citizens are eligible to receive $20 booklets for fresh fruits and vegetables in the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Coupons, Ann Feightner, director of the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging, reports.
For 2007, the federal program targets low-income recipients, and coupons may be used only at these farmers' markets that run through the end of October: Olean's War Vet's Park, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays; Franklinville, Park Square, 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays; Randolph Pavilion behind Fire Hall, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays; Salamanca's Jefferson Park, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays.
Seniors must attest to age and income eligibility at or below $1,574 per month for a one-person household, or $2,110 per month for a two-person household.
Distribution of coupon booklets is targeted to communities with farmers' markets and are provided on a first-come basis. For information, call the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging at (800) 462-2901 or 373-8032.
Independence Party sets its election endorsements
FREEDOM - The Cattaraugus County Independence Party recently announced endorsements for the 2007 fall elections.
Party Chairwoman Brenda R. Schmidt released the endorsements for County Legislature, county and city offices. Endorsed for County Legislature races were Crystal Abers in District 1, James Ellis and Patrick Murphy in District 2, and John Zimbardi and Norman Marsh in District 3.
The Independence Party also supported Gina Gasper in District 4 while choosing Jerry Burrell, Donna Vickman and Charles Couture in District 5, Eva Taggerty and Michael O'Brien in District 6, Dick Giardini and Jim Boser in District 7, Richard Chase in District 8, Ken McClune and Carmen Vecchiarella in District 9, and George Pancio, Linda Witte, John Padlo, James Snyder and Mike McLaughlin in District 10.
Endorsements for offices in the City of Olean included Mike Kayes in Ward 2 and Linda Edstrom in Ward 4, Richard Smith in Ward 6 and David Anastasia in Ward 7.
Salamanca endorsements were Jeff Pond for mayor, Stephen Montgomery and Bill Ferguson for aldermen.
On the county level, County Clerk Jim Griffith and Coroner Howard Van Renssalaer were also endorsed.
