Norman E. Byer, a past president of Kenilworth Volunteer Fire Company and a member for 42 years, died Monday in Kenmore Mercy Hospital of heart failure. He was 73.
The Town of Tonawanda resident was a graduate of Kenmore High School and Erie Community College. He also served four years in the Air Force.
Mr. Byer was employed as a construction electrician by Local 41 of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and served as the local's credit union loan officer for 13 years. He also was a board member of Local 41 Retirees.
Mr. Byer was a 25-gallon blood donor to the Red Cross.
He and his wife, the former Barbara Sloan, whom he married Nov. 17, 1961, were founders of Retarded Children's Fund "at a time," she said, "when people were just beginning to bring their retarded children out of the closet."
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Linda Byer-Kopcho and Chery Byer; a son, Richard Byer; a brother, David Byer; and a sister, Joyce McMahon.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in Lombardo Funeral Home, 885 Niagara Falls Blvd., Town of Tonawanda.
