The sixth annual Buffalo Sabres/Dick's Sporting Goods Street HockeyFest will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 19 on the streets surrounding HSBC Arena. The day-long tournament is open to boys and girls ages 5 and up. The cost is $100 per team and each squad will consist of five players and all teams are guaranteed three games. Each team member will receive a HockeyFest hat and T-shirt. Trophies will be awarded to champions in each of the six coed divisions. The division breakdown is: Mites (ages 5-7), Squirts (9-10), Pee Wee Juniors (11-12), Pee Wee Seniors (13-14), Midgets (15-17) and Legends (18 and over).

Players are responsible for bringing their own hockey sticks and gloves. Goalie equipment is mandatory. All players ages 5-7 are required to wear a helmet.

Applications are available online at www.sabres.com, at the Account Services office in HSBC Arena and Dick's Sporting Goods locations. Registration deadline is Aug. 1, subject to availability. Space is limited. Last year's event sold out. For information, call 855-4144.

The Buffalo Bills Alumni Foundation will hold its annual fundraising weekend Sept. 8-10 and will honor Bills Pro Bowl players from 1960 to the present. The weekend will kickoff with a Charity Gala on Sept. 8 at the Seneca Niagara Casino event center. There will be a tailgate party before the Bills home opener Sept. 9 and a golf tournament at Lancaster Country Club on Sept. 10.

Individuals interested in working on a committee or volunteering for the event weekend can contact Ann Brooker or Karen Stoklosa at the Kelly for Kids Foundation (204-1212, ext. 206 or 214). The events will raise money for local children's charities.

Three teams representing the Buffalo United Soccer Club won New York State West Youth Soccer Cup championships and advanced to the Region 1 (East) tournament in Portland, Maine, this weekend.

The boys under-13 team coached by David Coulter will be making their first appearance in the regionals. It will be the second appearance for the under-15 team coached by Henrik Ambarchian and the third for the under-17 team coached by Kevin O'Neil.

Hundreds of Western New Yorkers will take to the pathways of Beaver Island State Park on Saturday to raise money for pediatric cancer research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Former Sabre Rob Ray will serve as honorary chairman of the walk which will be emceed by 97 Rock's Rob Lederman.

It will be the inaugural event of the Kids Create Hope: Dr. Shane G. Ferguson Pediatric Cancer Research Fund. The fund was established by the family of Dr. Ferguson, who died last September after a three-year battle with pancreatic cancer. There will be product giveaways, refreshments donated by local merchants, music and other activities.

BASKETBALL: Teams are needed for "B" and "C" leagues starting Monday. For information call 839-9330. . . . Medaille College still has openings for its Individual Workout Camp and Summer Day Camp for boys. The camps run this week through Friday and July 30 to Aug. 3. For information call 880-2347. . . . Pete Lonergan's Lady Mavs Girls Basketball Camp at Medaille College has openings for the July 9-12 session. The camps run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are for girls ages 8-16. SKATEBOARDING: Registrations are being taken for Session II of the Beginner Skateboard Lessons offered by the Town of Hamburg Recreation Department. The five-week session will run on Saturdays starting July 7 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Hamburg Skate Park. Boys and girls ages 7 and older are welcome. For information, call 646-5145.
