Hitwiththeladies, Buffalo Raceway-based New York Sire Stakes champion trotter, will get an unusual test of speed and stamina over the next three days.
After the 3-year-old gelding races in tonight's $25,370 ninth race at Hamburg, owner/trainer Allan McCarty plans to van him to Monticello Raceway to compete Monday afternoon in a $25,000 elimination race for the $388,000 Nevele Pride Stakes on June 25.
Jack Flanigen, who has reined the 2006 NYSS 2-year-old champ to nine wins in 13 starts and earnings of $235,473, will drive in both.
"He's going to do both events," McCarty said. "They [harness horses] still race two heats [in one day] so this won't be a problem."
Hitwiththeladies is an underdog tonight against favorite Bet To Win, driven by Jim Morrill Jr. Bet To Win beat Hitwiththeladies by 3 1/4 lengths at Vernon Downs on May 28.
"This year there are a lot of horses that have stepped up," McCarty said. "It's a little more difficult this year, but mine has stepped up, too."
The race is one of five NYSS races for 3-year-old trotters on the 13-race, 6:30 p.m. card.
Also tonight, at Mohawk Raceway in Campbellville, Ont., Twotwentytwo, owned by Dr. Dominic Colarusso Jr. of Olean, is a 20-1 long shot from the No. 1 post in the $1.5 million (Canadian) North America Cup, Canada's richest harness race. The 3-year-old will be driven by Roger Mayotte for Rheal Bourgeois.
