NIAGARA NEWS BRIEFS

Water Board will flush hydrants starting Monday

NIAGARA FALLS -- The Niagara Falls Water Board plans to flush some hydrants beginning Monday between Ontario and Pine avenues and Hyde Park Boulevard to Whirlpool Street.

If customers experience discolored water after maintenance crews leave the neighborhood, they should run cold water at the tap until clear.

Board approves purchase of fire company site

NEWFANE -- The Newfane Town Board this week approved the purchase of the Miller Hose Fire Company's fire hall and property for $225,000, town officials said.

Town Supervisor Timothy R. Horanburg, returning from recent heart surgery, announced the town will purchase the property at 2737 Main St. with surplus money from the town's general fund.

The town intends to move the majority of the town offices now at 2896 Transit Road into the Main Street location.

It will designate the rest of the building as a community center to accommodate senior citizens and others, Horanburg said.

A public information session held last week on the town's proposal drew more than 100 residents, "and the people were very supportive of this," Horanburg said.

Consultants have pegged the renovation of the old fire hall at $540,000 to $900,000, but Horanburg has stated that the town has $1.3 million set aside for the project and could seek additional grants.

Miller Hose plans to move into its new McKee Street fire hall in the next several weeks, fire officials said.
