NORTH TONAWANDA -- Three police agencies were involved in a Sunday morning car chase that reached speeds of 85 mph and ended with the arrest of a Lockport man on drunken and drugged driving charges.

Niagara County Sheriff's Deputy Greg Schuey said the chase began at 1:30 a.m. when he spotted a Chevrolet Camaro traveling 85 mph in a 55-mph zone on Mapleton Road in the Town of Pendleton. He tried to stop the car near Starpoint High School but said the driver slowed down and then sped off again.

Schuey said he cut off the chase when speeds reached dangerous levels but broadcast the license plate number. State police picked up the chase on Bear Ridge Road, with North Tonawanda police joining in at Niagara Falls Boulevard.

Eventually stopped near the former Melody Fair, Karl G. Phillips, 27, of Aiken Road, was found to be intoxicated and in possession of a small amount of cocaine. He told officers he had used cocaine within the past two hours.

In addition to driving while intoxicated and driving while impaired by drugs, Phillips was charged with speeding, reckless driving, passing a red light and unlawfully fleeing from a police officer in a motor vehicle.
