George P. Smyntek of East Aurora, who as regional economist with the state Department of Labor was considered the foremost authority on the area's work force, died Thursday in Mercy Hospital after a brief illness. He was 68.
A native of Buffalo, Mr. Smyntek was a graduate of Canisius College, where he received a bachelor's degree in economics. He worked for the Department of Labor for 39 years, retiring about five years ago.
Because of his expertise in the field of economics, Mr. Smyntek was quoted extensively in The Buffalo News over the years, particularly on the unemployment rates.
His wife, Joan A. Kolek Smyntek, died Jan. 10.
He is survived by two sons, Kevin and Kenneth; a daughter, Amy Schulz; a brother, Lawrence; and a sister, Barbara.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 520 Oakwood Ave., East Aurora.
