What a weekend for Alden, the only softball team to go 4-0 in the Immaculata Tournament. After two wins on Saturday, the Bulldogs won a pair of one-run games on Sunday in the fifth annual event being played at the Nike Base in Hamburg.
Alden beat Mount St. Mary, 3-2, after trailing, 2-1, going into the seventh. Kristen Flick singled in Carlissa Cole with the winning run. Allison Klein (five innings) and Cole (two innings) combined on a four-hitter.
The Bulldogs also beat Mount Mercy, 3-2. Junior second baseman Alyssa Bachman snared a hard grounder as the potential tying run was rounding third. Cole went the distance with eight strikeouts. Allison Klein had three hits in three trips and Maria Blum drove in two runs.
Immaculata knocked off No. 1 seed Ripley in its semifinal game, 7-3. Freshman pitcher Megan Smith threw a one-hitter with no earned runs. Lauren Smith was 3-4 with two doubles and Meghan Hennessy drove in two runs with two hits. For the tournament, Smith has 32 strikeouts in 23 innings.
The Bulldogs, who are the defending champions, will play Immaculata (3-1) for the tournament title sometime this week.
In boys lacrosse, junior Paul Eaton had three goals as St. Francis beat Canisius, 8-4, in the Monsignor Martin Association opener for both teams.
